Night of Museums: Dancing Workshop, Film Festival, and Movie Marathon

Julia Shostak’s KVARTAL presentation and workshopOn May 17, 2014, the Night of Contemporary Art will take place in the Museum of Modern Fine Art.To mark the International Museum Day, the Museum of Modern Fine Art invites connoisseurs of art to participate in a variety of events.

In addition to the exhibition One Hundred Years of the Belarusian Avant garde, the museum offers its visitors to participate in the movie marathon Life and Drama, the film festival Cinema Perpetuum Mobile, and the dancing workshop by Julia Shostak’s KVARTAL.

The Night of Contemporary Art features the following events:

Julia Shostak’s KVARTAL presentation and workshop

Julia Shostak’s KVARTAL is the founder of the social dance style in Belarus. Currently, KVARTAL is the largest partner dance school in Minsk and a place where people dance, relax, socialize, and get acquainted. During the Night of Museums, the participants will be able to master skills of Lindy Hop, Boogaloo, and Merengue.

The festival’s visitors receive an opportunity to enjoy watching the following movies:

Feel (Directed by Marcus Hanisch, Germany). During a hoedown, an elderly couple rediscovers their youth and love.

The Gift (Directed by Julio Pot, Chile). An animated story of an ordinary couple. She can't get rid of his gift even after they break up.

Land (Directed by Masanobu Hiraoka, Japan). Abstraction and metamorphoses.

Wind (Directed by Robert Löbel, Germany). A windy animated short film discovers a world dominated by the wind and shows daily life of its inhabitants who have learned to live with it.

The American night of Angélique (La nuit américaine d’Angélique), directed by Pierre-Emmanuel Lyet et Joris Clerté, France). When watching the movie La nuit américaine by François Truffaut, Angélique discovers thatit is possible to dream up one’s life.

Aeroevasiones (Directed by Dorta Carlos Hernandez, Spain). A documentary about the work of María Belén Morales, a female pioneer of sculpture in Canarias. The sculptress is famous for exploring different materials and techniques, for working during the period of Franco’s regime, and for her evolution to abstract art.

In the Nick of Time (Ein Augenblick in mir) (Directed by David M. Lorenz, Germany). Arne, a desperate actor in his mid–thirties is intent on committing suicide. Just as he is about to take a step into the afterlife, he sees two huge children’s eyes staring at him from a window across the street. The child is closely following Arne’s every move. Eventually, Arne starts performing artistic tricks for the little boy, his window turning more and more into a stage. A short film about passion and the arts.

Buoy (Directed by David Higgs, UK). As NASA's Curiosity descends towards the surface of Mars, back on Earth, a stranger sits on an empty beach.  A surreal drama telling about strange and irrational behavior that people demonstrate in a crisis.

Pollock (2000). Directed by Ed Harris, USA. A film about the life and career of the American painter, Jackson Pollock.

Basquiat (1996). Directed by Julian Schnabel, USA. A biopic drama based on the life of American postmodernist and neo expressionist artist Jean–Michel Basquiat. A story of the rise from a street artist to a star. A story of a high price one has to pay for the success.

Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006). Directed by Steven Shainberg, USA. A drama film starring Nicole Kidman as iconic American photographer Diane Arbus who was known for her strange, disturbing images. Having fallen in love with her eccentric newly arrived neighbor who suffers from excessive hair growth, a shy woman turns her back on her wealthy and established family. She undertakes a journey that will awaken her remarkable artistic genius and will put Diane on her path to becoming one of the most revered photographers of the twentieth century.
