First IMAX Cinema to Open in Belarus

On May 16, a news emerged that the first IMAX cinema in Belarus is due to appear in the first quarter of 2018. The new cinema will be located in the Palazzo shopping mall, which is currently under construction.

According to preliminary information, the movie theater complex will include eight screens. One of the screens will support the IMAX film format. An expected capacity of the multiplex is around 1,300 people.

The appearance of an IMAX cinema in Belarus has been talked about for years, but until now no plans have been made to implement the project.

IMAX, an acronym for Image Maximum, is a motion picture film format and a set of cinema projection standards created by Canadian company IMAX Corporation. It allows for recording and displaying images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film systems. The IMAX cinema screen has a greater width than the length of a cinema hall, which makes the image borders not visible and creates an immersive viewing experience.

The world’s first IMAX cinema was opened in 1971 in Toronto, Canada. The largest IMAX screen in the world is situated in Sydney, Australia. As of January 1, 2016, there were 1061 IMAX theatres in 67 countries.
