Polo Marathon in Minsk

On Sunday, September 13, Minsk welcomed the first large–scale race in Belarus — the Polo Marathon. More than 16 thousand participants from 36 countries registered for the event, with three thousand people joining on the spot. The marathon started at the Sports Palace and continued through the central part of Independence Avenue, as well as Karl Marx Street, Victory Square, the Red Church, and the Trinity Suburb.

The event was a part of a cultural program dedicated to Minsk City Day. This year, the capital of Belarus celebrated its 948th birthday.

The big winners of the marathon are Vitaly Shafar from Ukraine and Olga Mazurenok from Belarus. They were the first participants to complete the distance of 21 kilometers. Each of the winners received around $1670 in prize money.

Maxim Antsuk, one of the participants of the marathon, also had something to celebrate. He proposed to his girlfriend Diana right at the finish line after completing the race. His proposal was accepted.

Some of the Minsk city authorities also took part in the event. Vadim Devyatovsky, Head of the Belarusian Athletics Federation, ran five thousand meters. Mikhail Zhuravkov, Education Minister, chose the same distance, while Maxim Ryzhenkov, Assistant to the President for Sport and the First Vice–President of the National Olympic Committee, ran ten thousand meters.

Svein Arne Hansen, President of the European Athletics Federation, praised the marathon and said that it was very successful for a new event.
