Minsk Welcomes Great British Festival

On June 16, the British Embassy in Minsk organizes The Great British Festival, a free outdoor event in Minsk, Belarus. The festival will take place in the Upper Town.

According to Fiona Gibb, British Ambassador to Belarus, the festival will reflect British culture, business, sports, fashion, food, music, theater, and education. It is expected that roughly 10,000 people will attend the event.

One of the yards of the Upper Town will turn into a makeshift university, inviting visitors to find out about higher education in the United Kingdom, pass a mock IELTS exam, and check their pronunciation and knowledge of orthography. Alumni of Oxford University and University of the Arts will share their experience of studying in the UK and speak about the advantages of a British diploma. The guests will be able to participate in a spelling bee contest and a Scrabble competition.

Four bookcrossing shelves will give visitors a chance to familiarize themselves with the British literature, while a book market will sell the works of British authors.

Fans of sports will be delighted to participate in a FIFA championship on XBox, take a golf lesson, or a free tennis training on a court that will resemble the famous Centre Court at Wimbledon.

Various cafés and restaurants will cook famous British dishes, including fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, and five–o’clock desserts. Drummers of Melodians Street Orchestra, a cover band Somethin’ Regenerated, and Sian Evans (formerly of a British electronic band Kosheen) will perform at the festival.

The program of The Great British Festival also includes a fashion show, declamation of William Shakespeare’s poems, and a car show.

The event will conclude with a party.
